Semicircular Canal Reflex on Splenius Capitis Muscle of Rabbits

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to explore the functional interrelation between individual semicircular canals and the extensor neck muscles in rabbits. Semicircular canal nerves were electrically stimulated in various combinations and the reflex responses of the splenius capitis muscle were recorded in terms of isometric tension or electromyographic activities, and the following results. were obtained.
1. Simultaneous stimulation of all unilateral canal nerves caused relaxation of the ipsilateral splenius capitis muscle and contraction of the contralateral muscle.
2. Stimulation of a unilateral anterior canal nerve decreased myographic activities of the ipsilateral neck muscle and increased the activities of the cotnralateral one.
3. Separate nerve stimulation of the two vertical canals, which are known to be a functional pair in physiologic state, elicited reciprocal reactions of the neck muscle.
4. Overlapped stimulation of the bilateral horizontal canal nerves revealed that the ipsilateral horizontal canal excitation evoked decreased activities, and the contralateral canal excitation evoked increased activities of the extensor neck muscle.
5. Overlapped stimulation of the two vertical canal nerves in a unilateral labyrinth revealed summing effect in the activity changes of the neck muscle.
6 Stimulation of a unilateral canal nerve, always produced antagonistic, reactions on the bilateral splenius capitis muscles; excitation of the contralateral neck muscle and inhibition of the ipsilateral one.
Based on the above experimental evidences, the author was able to draw a schematic model which may express the interrelation between the semicircular canals and the extensor neck muscle. When this model was compared to the one which was proposed previously by Wilson and Maeda for cats, some differences were found. Such discrepancies could not just be attributed to the species differences of the experimental animals, and further studies should provide better explanation to this problem.
